About

GoAnimate! is a web-based animation software created by Alvin Hung. It is used to make quick and efficient animations, often by businesses and schools. It is well-known online for its homogenized and somewhat low-quality appearance, and has gained an ironic fanbase.

History

GoAnimate was first created in 2007 by a Colombia major in programming and economics named Alvin Hung[1]. He founded the site with the goal of making it easy to create short videos for business use.[1][2] One of the main selling points is the interface, which uses simple actions like drag-and-drop and menu choices in order to create the video from a library of pre-made assets and movements. This ease of use makes it simple for beginners like students or people who are not trained in animation. The tool quickly gained a large fanbase due to its quick and efficient method of creating animations and relatively low cost. In 2014, GoAnimate created an option for schools, allowing schools to work with GoAnimate for a monthly fee. In 2015, GoAnimate shortened the trial option, making it only 14 days.[2]

In August of 2015, it was announced that the website would move to being HTML5 based, and would cut a number of its usable themes in the process by January 2016.[3] This included the website's most famous themes Comedy World and Lil' Peepz. This development was met with an extremely negative response from the fanbase, who expressed their displeasure in their videos. Some of these videos depicted site founder Alvin Hung getting either abused or portrayed in various unflattering ways.

Feeling that this was the end of their video-making, the fanbase was ready to move on to other animation programs, such as Plotagon. However, when it was discovered that the Comedy World and Lil' Peepz themes were still able to be used in the version of GoAnimate made for schools[4], the fanbase took to using that version instead until HTML5 was applied to that version without the non-business themes being upgraded for it as well. With the various beloved themes like Comedy World no longer accessible under normal means on the website, this will likely mean that use of the software for "X Gets Grounded" videos (see below) will probably drop considerably.

Features Of GoAnimate

One of the main selling points is the interface, which uses simple actions like drag-and-drop and menu choices in order to create the video from a library of pre-made assets and movements. This ease of use makes it simple for beginners like students or people who are not trained in animation.

There are two levels of pre-made films: first are the animated shorts of the Quick Video Maker, which contains a selection of pre-made films which only require dialogue and voice recording. The second level, which is called the Full Featured Video Maker, has the ability to create scenarios from scratch from their asset library.[3] Video downloads are tagged with a GoAnimate watermark in the lower left hand corner unless the user has a paid plan. GoAnimate also has a system for students and schools with increased privacy and access controls.

Reception

While GoAnimate has a thriving fanbase of subscribers who use the software to make animated video series that they then release online. Some of the more notable users include Paul Dini, whose show Super Rica and Rashy was animated using GoAnimate and TheGoAnimateGuy67, who has made 74 videos using the tool and posted them on YouTube to his over 20,000 subscribers. In addition, posts and mentions of the videos are frequent on Tumblr[5], which includes a blog dedicated to screencaps from the many videos[6], as well as on YouTube, where there are over 431,000 videos tagged with the term.[7]

The software also has a large cadre of vocal critics. Some examples of those who dislike GoAnimate include Harry Partridge and OneyNG, who are both web animators who criticize the format for its homogenous look and lack of creativity in the videos below.

X Gets Grounded

X Gets Grounded refers to a series of videos made using GoAnimate, where someone gets caught doing bad or illegal things and gets grounded by his/her parents for it. The most notable series of Grounded Videos features Caillou, Dora, and many other characters from other children's cartoons, and first began appearing on YouTube in 2011, with the video "Brian Gets in Trouble at School." As of November 4th, 2014, there are about 232,000 results for "gets grounded" on YouTube.[8]

    The article's not very explanatory. Sure, I've heard of this site and it does receive wide criticism and some pretty harsh comments, but I'm not sure if it can truly be considered a meme. Harry Partridge is not exactly enough evidence to suffice either. +1 Wait… Overall, needs work.

    I understand since you're a new member and I'm glad you actually did put some effort into this entry, rather than just creating a useless article to begin with. In that essence, thanks.

    I think this is a very notable site simply because of all the hate it gets from respectable animators. Therefore, I think it deserves an entry. I would say this needs a lot of work, and then a confirm.

    Whenever I watch one of these kinds of videos it's always really hard to tell when it's serious or just ironic. In particular I notice a good number of videos that focus on the same subject matter over and over. One that seems to be inexplicably popular is doing a Go Animate version of that old Caillou episode when he throws a tantrum due to not being able to go to the circus.

    My comment below still stands, even now I still can't always tell when these videos are being "ironic" or a sincere attempt at making an "animation."

    I will say that when I was checking out these videos not long ago I noticed "copycats" are really common. For example some guy made a video where he actually attempted a story line about a tornado hitting a city, and then a bunch of people copied that same video almost word for word. Again, not sure if ironically or they seriously just "stole" something from a video that frankly wasn't very good to begin with.

      Goanimate has several awful "styles", and the most prominent one that is used in the Caillou videos is obviously a cheap rip-off of the Seth Macfarlane cartoons. I think it was called "comedy" or something. If I'm not mistaken, one of the backgrounds is a recolor of one from Family Guy as well.

    Alright…well, LONG story, I don't remember exactly WHEN this happened and it was quite awhile ago and I might have not gotten the full image of the events, so yeah you might not find this creditable. So here's a short summary of the forum incident.

    It was back in 2013 I think? The GO!Animate forums had a relatively small population, and it consisted mostly of kids and teenagers…without active moderation however, there were a few trolls and flame wars. After increasing demands, the staff sent in someone, "Dan the Handsome".
    At first every one thought he was a cool guy, banning some of the more infamous trolls and talking with us casually too. So everything was all right and well…until the accusations that he banned the wrong users came up and the accusations that he banned people for talking up to him. The more famous trolls on alt. accounts weren't taken care of.

    +5
    • Overlibertyshead The Touhou fanboy - 8 years ago

      Now, I cannot confirm this, or the rumor that during that period over 200 users were banned needlessly, but one thing was clear. The forum was TOXIC to Dan by that time. The flame wars got worse, and eventually a fan forum called GoTavern was created for the purpose of being a flame war shelter when shit was going down on the GO!A forums. (…I was the mod there in fact.)

      As time went by, the flame wars got only worse and worse, even GoTavern started having flame wars. Then the rage exceeded 200% MAD when something that I'm still pissed about happened ;

      • It was announced that they would be making the forums paid users-only. *
        At that moment flame wars started in PMs and once the change was in place the flame wars started BURNING UP GoTavern. Luckily however, the flames calmed down at the cost of many people leaving.

      Someone tried to create a loophole by creating a mini "chat room" in the comment sections of a video. Then some woman-child who (pretty much confirmed to have countless amounts of alternate alt. accounts to promote herself that the mods haven't taken care of…presumably because they like sugar-coating paying users so much) sold them out and…the chat room perished.

      This isn't even the whole story, sure the population of the forums was pretty small and may not be worth noting on this page, but I feel like this is something I should say on a page about GO!A. Fuck them.

      +3
    • Overlibertyshead The Touhou fanboy - 8 years ago

      Other bullshit GO!A pulled includes;
      - Sugar coating paid users
      - Treating their free population like dirt
      - Closing Domoanimate
      - limiting more and more from free users
      - Studio hasn't improved but rather has become more clunky
      - Banning someone for being a fansite mod (no, LITERALLY their written reason)

      I was wrong trying to make at least "okay" animations on there. Now it's all gone.

              I actually went there to dig up a video two days ago and…
              You know, as someone who used to love the site for allowing me to meet some of my more memorable friends and tried to actually make half-decent animations and not grounded videos….

              Seeing that the homepage had been updated so that the first thing you see is a trial sign-up form made me want to puke.

              As much as people mocked it, I used to think Go!A was a fun site even though it had it's share of problems, and that it had potential to be an actually GOOD drag and drop animation engine. Now they're too focused on money and making their things look professional they don't even care if they take out features and actual practicality…it didn't have to be like this.

    As time went by, the flame wars got only worse and worse, even GoTavern started having flame wars. Then the rage exceeded 200% MAD when something that I'm still pissed about happened ;

Fuck them.

    Other bullshit GO!A pulled includes;

    Welp, it looks like these videos won't be around much longer. According to GoAnimate's Wikipedia page, they announced in a blogpost last month that when the site migrates to HTML5 in January, they will end support of all video-making features not centered on business. This includes the comedy world suite.

    In short, the GoAnimate fandom is getting grounded grounded grounded grounded for the last time.

      GoAnimate actually reminds me of the old GMod videos since it's impossible to make things look or act realistically. Physics and logic are out the window (regardless of whether the author knowingly embraces it or earnestly tries to make it any sort of "lifelike," since it will turn out silly regardless), the voices are awful, and everything is bizarre and dumb. I love it.

      a fake VHS opening is a video of a fake intro of a show or something that just from go!animate and such, which the videos are literally copyright shit.
      For Example (this video don’t exist BTW): Caillou: the movie 1995 Intro

    Being dead meat appears to be a running theme of GoAnimate! as well. It's pretty much the same thing as being grounded.

      I always thought "Getting in Dead Meat" in the context of the GoAnimate videos was that it was a euphemism for getting a bad behavior card and getting suspended/expelled from school. Doesn't make it any less weird, though.

    When I stumbled across a "grounded" video on one of my many YouTube spelunking episodes, I could've sworn I came across someone's personal fetish videos. There were just video after video of the same thing.
