About
Neural Net Guesses Images is a Twitter gimmick account that posts results of image predictions made by a neural net, with source images being memes. Launched in September 2021, the account achieved major prominence on Twitter, with many of its tweets going viral.
History
In June 2021, computer engineer @MKVRiscy created gimmick account Neural Net Guesses Memes (@ResNeXTGuesser).[1] The account, running on NNTwitterBot on GitHub,[2] collects images (memes) submitted by Twitter users, analyzes them via means of a neural net and subsequently posts results on Twitter, sharing the top image prediction generated by the neural net.
The account remained inactive until September 24th, 2021, when it made its first post,[3] an image prediction of an Eminem Throwing Things meme (shown below, left).
The account first started gaining recognition on Twitter[4][5] in early October 2021 after two of its image predictions, one based on a photograph of a car filled with bananas and the other on a science diagram that looks like shitpost gained 1,100 retweets and 4,300 likes and 3,400 retweets and 19,300 likes, respectively (shown below, left and right).
Starting in mid-October 2021, multiple tweets posted by the account went viral on Twitter, with some examples gaining over 10,000 retweets. For example, a November 1st, 2021, post[6] in which a photograph of a cheeseburger with a comical number of slices of cheese was incorrectly interpreted as a "pineapple" gained over 16,500 retweets and 160,900 likes in three months (shown below, left). A November 25th, 2021, post[7] incorrectly recognizing a fridge filled with eggs as "ping-pong ball" with 100 percent certainty received over 21,400 retweets and 219,800 likes in two months (shown below, right).
Features
The gimmick account runs on the NN Twitter Bot hosted on GitHub.[2] On December 20th, 2021, an update to the bot was introduced so that challenging submissions that were often recognized by the net as "comic book" and "book jacket" would receive an additional prediction, later changed to two additional predictions.[8][9]
