REFACE (formerly Doublicat) is a deepfake app which allows to face swap GIFs. The app was released in late December 2019 and reached viral popularity in January 2020.

History

On December 23rd, 2019, Ukranian developer NEOCORTEXT released version 1.00 of Doublicat: Face Swap AI-tool application for iOS[1] and Android.[2]

The application allowed users to apply their own or any photographed face to a collection of popular GIFs, with their face replacing that of a person in the GIF (examples shown below).

On January 13th, 2019, The Next Web[3] reported about the app, with Mashable[4] and other online outlets covering the news in the following days. As of January 15th, 2019, the app had over 100,000 downloads on Google Play.

Features

The application utilizes deepfake technology to face swap any from a selection of popular GIFs with any photographed face. Upon downloading the application, the user is offered to make photograph of their own or another face, and then to select a GIF from a limited pool. Upon selection, the user is offered an option to "reface" the GIF, with the resulting faceswapped GIF albe to be shared online or saved to the device.
