About

/r/Layer is a forum on social networking site Reddit created in partnership between Reddit and Adobe. The forum allows users draw pictures, shapes, or words and add them to an ever-changing collage. The collage went live on September 9th, 2019. The concept is similar to the /r/place, an April Fools Day event Reddit ran in 2017.

History

While "/r/Layer" was launched on June 24th, 2014,[1] the /r/Layer collage project went live on September 9th, 2019.[2] User Youngluck, a moderator of the subreddit, created the pinned post on the subreddit, which reads:

We created something for you to create something; A Layer. You can create one or create a few. You can add to another or start anew. What's on your layer is up to you. This is a communal playground, so have fun, be good to each other, and create (or transform) responsibly.
This moment was designed by Reddit in partnership with Adobe.

User hero0fwar created a tutorial for how to use the subreddit. The video explains that a user can select a square on the collage on which to draw an image. The user then draws an image, and their image appears on the collage (shown below). The user can add different layers to their image, but are limited by a "paint meter" which prevents them from drawing indefinitely. After they're finished, their drawing can be uploaded onto the community canvas. After the first day, the subreddit went private at night, reopening at 10 AM EST on September 10th.

Welcome to Layer. I made this tutorial for you. Enjoy from r/Layer

Reddit added an icon to the top of their home page which brought users to the subreddit (shown below).

oC

The subreddit and the addition of the homepage icon led to several questions on /r/OutOfTheLoop.[3][4][5] Redditor OptimisticAlone attempted to rally the Andrew Yang subreddit to raid the page.[6]
