StarByFace is a celebrity look-a-like generator. Users upload their photographs to the website, and using facial recognition software, the site generates a celebrity that it determined the user resembles.

On July 16th, 2018, StarByFace was registered.^[1]

Features

Users of the site upload their photographs to StarByFace.com. According to the site,^[2] "The face should be clearly visible, it’s better to use frontal photos. Face recognition accuracy depends on the resolution and quality of a face image."

The site's servers then "creates a facial pattern," locating " key components of faces, including eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth and position." Finally, StarByMe determines a celebrity the user looks most resembles.

StarByFace Challenge

About a year after the site launched, the StarByFace Challenge went viral. The earliest available reference of the challenge was posted by instagram ^[3] user @dominique_the_strange6 on August 16th, 2019. However, this is not the origin of the challenge.

Three days later, on August 19th, actress Shay Mitchell tweeted ^[4] the challenge with the caption, "Wow can't believe I just found out my real parents are Tupac and myself." Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 11,000 likes and 720 retweets (shown below).

Following the tweet, fans and followers of Mitchell shared their results as well.

On August 20th, PopBuzz^[5] published a report on the challenge.
