About

Smiley Sings refers to a trend of animated videos where a smiley face sings along to a song. The videos are set to music and capture the designing of a yellow smiley face in an image editing program, most often MS Paint, and vertically resizing the mouth to simulate singing. These would inspire videos where a mouth was manipulated over a pre-existing picture of a character, as well as other image program based memes like Trumpet Boy.

Origin

On December 1st, 2006, YouTube channel kentdoddsproductions[1] posted the earliest known iteration of Smiley Sings with an animated rendition of the Survivor song "Eye of the Tiger." Within 12 years, the video received more than 63,000 views (shown below).

Spread

That day, kentdoddproductions uploaded another version, this time set to "Weird Al" Yankovic's "The Night Santa Went Crazy." The post received more than 22,000 views in 12 years (shown below, left). That same day, they also uploaded a version synced to Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams."[4] On January 12th, 2007, they uploaded a variation that featured a full-bodied smiley singing "Numa Numa". The post received more than 24,000 views in less than 12 years (shown below, right).

On April 4th, 2007, kentdoddsproductions released a video where he announced that he had entered the "Numa Numa" video into the "2007 New Numa Contest" and urged the viewer to vote for his submission.[5] They placed 47th.[2]

On June 28th, 2008, the channel randomvids300[3] reposted the kentdoddsproductions video for the Green Day song "Boulevard of Broken Dreams." As of 2019, it has more than 4 million views (shown below).

On May 19th, 2013, the YouTube[6] channel Smiley Sings launched--though it is likely that it was originally the the YouTube channel for Rickard Games, due five year gap between posting and launching, as well as the presnce of links to Rikard Game social media in the page's about section.[7] Five years later, on September 13th, 2018, the channel uploaded the video "Smiley sings britney spears one more time." It received more than 2,000 views in less than one year (shown blow, left). Two days later, they uploaded the video "Smiley sings toto africa".
