Smug Cat is the nickname given to a cat featured in a photograph in which it appears to be wearing a smug facial expression. On Tumblr, the picture has been used in numerous mashup photoshops with a photo of a cat being threatened with a knife.

Origin

On October 10th, 2009, BodyBuilding Forums^[7] member Will_B posted a picture of a cat wearing a smug-looking facial expression in a thread titled "ITT post pictures that are underused here in the misc" (shown below).

Spread

On June 7th, 2010, BodyBuilding Forums^[2] member alphamate posted the cat photo in a thread titled "Cat Trollface." On November 30th, 2011, FunnyJunk^[6] user arcanesyrge submitted the cat photo along with the caption "Smug cat approves." On April 28th, 2014, Redditor hotchocolate submitted a photoshopped picture titled "Sushicat," featuring Smug Cat seated in front of a plate of sushi. Prior to being archived, the post accumulated more than 3,300 votes (91% upvoted) and 250 comments on the /r/funny^[8] subreddit.

On June 8th, 2015, NeoGAF Forums^[11] member the chris replied to a photograph of a young goat with the Smug Cat picture (shown below, left). On November 19th, Twitter user @fightgoals^[10] posted the Smug Cat photo, garnering upwards of 700 retweets and 500 likes in four months. On December 16th, Fark user Mudd's woman posted the Smug Cat picture with the caption "Oh You…" (shown below, right).

Knife Cat

Knife Cat refers to a popular photoshop of Smug Cat of it's face imposed on a picture of a cat being threatened with a knife.
