Sonia is a character set to appear in the upcoming Pokémon Sword and Shield games. She is the assistant to Professor Magnolia. After her reveal in the June 5th, 2019 Nintendo Direct for the games, she was quickly the subject of much fan art from the Pokémon fandom.

Origin

On June 5th, 2019, Nintendo held a Direct focused entirely on Pokémon Sword and Shield. After introducing new Pokémon and mechanics, the Direct introduced new characters, including Sonia, an assistant to Professor Magnolia (shown below).

Spread

Shortly after the direct, Pokémon fans were quick to begin creating fan art of Sonia. Twitter user @AWDtwit^[1] posted fan art of Sonia and Milo, one of the new game's gym leaders, gaining over 450 retweets and 2,200 likes (shown below, left). User @jjcareksims^[2] also posted art, gaining over 200 retweets and 700 likes (shown below, right).

Much of the content created around Sonia was either NSFW or jokes about the prevalence of NSFW content. For example, Reddit user GullibleContract^[3] posted a reference to Rule 34 about the character, gaining over 13,000 points (shown below, left). Twitter user @komoriarts^[4] posted art of Sonia looking upset she was the new "It" girl for Pokémon fans, gaining over 50 retweets and 370 likes (shown below, right).

On YouTube, Alpharad posted his reaction to the Direct and titled it "Pokémon's New Best Girl," gaining over 439,000 views (shown below, left). User Bulma Bunny posted a parody video wherein Sonia searches herself on Twitter and discovered Rule 34 art (shown below, right).
