About

Sonic_Hedgehog is the official Twitter account for SEGA's Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. In June 2015, the account began interacting with fans, incorporating a large subtextual knowledge of memes, lore, Internet culture, which caused it to become much more popular.

History

The official English Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter, @sonic_hedgehog, was launched on January 27th, 2009.[1] Prior to June 1st, 2015, the Sonic social media channels were run by former SEGA employee Kellie Parker; on her last day of employment, Aaron Webber, also known as RubyEclipse in his role as an admin on the SEGA Forums, was announced as her successor.[2] [3] In addition, Webber is SEGA's Associate Brand Manager.

Spread

Beginning on June 9, after the announcement of the new game Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice, Webber changed the account's tweet habits by beginning to respond to tweets made by users much more frequently. The first response was to a tweet made by video game journalist Jim Sterling, referencing an earlier account in which SEGA sent him a large Sonic poster in response for a negative review of the game Sonic Colors.[4] The tweet received 287 retweets and 560 favorites as of June 15th, 2015.

On the same day, @sonic_hedgehog responded to a question from another Twitter user by tweeting the infamous Gotta Go Fast illustration.[5] This tweet received more than 2,600 retweets and favorites as of June 15th, 2015.

On June 10th, the Twitter account responded to another fan's question about Sonichu, mocking Chris-chan's blue arms incident from late 2014.[6] On June 11th, @Sonic_Hedgehog responded to a previous tweet with a picture of a Sanic Hegehog game cover.[7] (shown below).

That same day, the newly-popular Twitter was covered in an article on the technology news site The Verge.[9]

On June 12th, the Twitter began a Knuckles-themed Photoshop contest; notable retweeted entrants to the contest include Archie Comics and the team for the Super Smash Bros. Brawl mod Project M.[8]
