I Don't Need a Doctor, X Will Save Me refers to a series of memes based on the image of 60's Spider-Man lying in a hospital bed that humorously imagine how various socioeconomic groups would argue for or against a doctor attending to them. Originating from a viral 2018 post, the format gained a significant presence on iFunny in late February 2020.
Origin
On June 12th, 2018, iFunny[1] user AndroodX (Androod_SWA) posted a still image of 60's Spider-Man lying in a hospital bed captioned "Atheists be like: I don't need a doctor, science will save me" (shown below). The post received over 4,500 smiles in two years.
Spread
In the following years, the post was often widely circulated on iFunny with multiple repubs and reposts.[2] On July 26th, 2018, iFunny[3] user PenguDanku posted a video of iFunny user SSoSS falling for a Ligma -type bait in the comments to the post.
On February 3rd, 2020, iFunny[4] user cringebleach posted the earliest derivative of the meme, making a joke about 2nd amendment supporters. The post received over 1,100 smiles in one month (shown below, left). On February 8th and 16th, iFunny users PantheraUncia[5] and testicle[6] posted memes about Calvinists and conservatives following the format (shown below, center and right). The posts received over 340 and over 700 smiles in one month, respectively.
On February 24th, 2020, iFunny user Exor[7] posted a version of the meme about Catholics that received over 360 smiles in two weeks (shown below, right). Later on the same day, iFunny user xmas[8] posted a version of the meme about conservatives that received over 920 smiles in the same period (shown below, right).
Following these posts, the format gained a significant presence on iFunny, with users posting Be Like memes imagining how various groups would argue for or against a doctor attending to them.
