About
SpongeBob in Handcuffs refers to a scene from SpongeBob SquarePants in which SpongeBob can be seen with his hands held out in handcuffs that are too large for his skinny wrists. The scene comes from a season 11 episode called "Cave Dwelling Sponge" in which SpongeBob gets mistaken for a prehistoric sponge named "Spongy Spongy," who wreaks havoc all over town. The meme is typically used in exploitable image macro memes used to joke about people being stuck in easily avoidable or low-stakes situations. A prominent variation of the meme is, "I'm getting cyberbullied by someone I do not know in real life."
Origin
The image of SpongeBob in handcuffs too large for his wrists comes from the season 11 episode, "Cave Dwelling Sponge" in which a prehistoric sponge named Spongy Spongy wreaked havoc around Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob was blamed for the damage and arrested, resulting in the still of him holding out his hands with handcuffs on them.[1][2] The episode originally aired on September 23rd, 2017 (relevant still from the episode is shown below).
An early use of the SpongeBob handcuffs meme came from a Gangster SpongeBob meme, as seen in a March 18th, 2021, video posted to iFunny[3] that received over 20 smiles in four years.

The meme also featured in a compilation of several Gangster SpongeBob memes posted to YouTube[4] by Q on March 28th, 2021, gathering over 28,000 views in four years.
