Standing Goat, also known as Playboi Carti Goat, refers to a series of memes revolved around a white taxidermy goat created to appear standing upright. The goat was made by Adele Morse in 2018, who also created Stoned Fox, but began seeing use in memes around 2019 due to its unsettling nature, blank expression and odd features, typically in the form of image macros.

Origin

Originally created by artist and taxidermist Adele Morse, Standing Goat was first posted on her Instagram^[1] account on April 23rd, 2018. The post included a short video and description of the goat, receiving nearly 10,000 views in roughly three years (seen below).

The most viral version of Standing Goat comes from a video shared on Morse’s Instagram^[2] account on September 5th, 2018, which depicted a camera rotating around the goat in a dark, creepy environment. This video received nearly 23,000 views in three years (shown below).

On December 12th, 2018, Redditor sadtoydogs uploaded the earliest known repost of the goat video to /r/WTF^[3], receiving over 1,500 upvotes and 200 comments in six months. On May 3rd, 2019, Twitter^[4] user jaboukie then posted the earliest-known meme under the caption “me trying to stay awake on benadryl,” receiving over 77,000 likes and 18,000 retweets in roughly two years (video since deleted).

PlayBoi Carti Goat

On May 26th, 2019, the earliest known example of the PlayBoi Carti Goat variant of the meme was uploaded by YouTuber^[5] southcoastghost with rapper PlayBoi Carti’s song "Pissy Pamper," receiving over 96,500 views in roughly two years (seen below, left). On March 2nd, 2020, YouTuber^[6] SilviaGunner then included this variant in a “Mimiga Town” remix video (seen below, right), later being added to the lore of SilviaGunner’s Fandom^[7] page.

Outside the PlayBoi Carti Goat version of the meme, the clip of Standing Goat in a dark setting was used extensively on numerous sites from 2019 to 2021. On October 11th, 2019, rapper Lil Nas X shared an example on his Twitter^[8] account, receiving over 1.8 million views and 110,000 likes in roughly two and a half years (shown below). On March 2nd, 2021, the Instagram^[9] account grmdaily shared another example, receiving over 32,700 likes in one month.
