About

Anne With An E is a Canadian television adaptation of the novel Anne of Green Gables. The series ran for three seasons between 2017 and 2019 on CBC and Netflix. After the series was cancelled after its third season, fans coordinated an extended hashtag campaign to renew the series, #RenewAnneWithAnE.

History

The series was created by Moira Walley-Beckett, who wanted to give the series a "documentary-like" level of realism.[1] Walley-Beckett also approached the series with the intent tackle modern themes of "identity, prejudice, bullying, being an outsider, searching for a way to be accepted and how to belong."[2] The series first aired on CBC on March 19th, 2017. It was then picked up by Netflix, where it aired on May 12th, 2017.

The show ran for three seasons, with seasons 2 and 3 running from September-November 2018 and 2019, respectively. After Season 3 concluded on the CBC, the show was cancelled.[3]

Online Presence

The show generated a passionate online fanbase who gravitated towards both the portrayal of the title character and its overarching themes. The show has gained over 186,000 likes on Facebook[4] since its debut. A subreddit for the series and the book, /r/Anne,[5] has gained over 2,500 subscribers since its creation in August of 2008.

#RenewAnneWithAnE

Following the series' cancellation on November 25th, 2019, fans organized an extended hashtag campaign to save the series, #RenewAnneWithAnE.[6] That day, Twitter user @glossiermcnulty[7] tweeted instructions on how to maintain pressure, gaining over 1,100 retweets and 1,500 likes (shown below, left). After three weeks of the campaign, fans began posting screenshots of chat logs they'd had with customer representatives at Disney+ in which the representatives hint that the network will look into acquiring the series (example shown below, right).
