Barbie is a fashion doll line created by American businesswoman Ruth Handler and produced by Mattel, first introduced on March 9th, 1959. Barbie has played a major role in the fashion doll market, with Mattel having sold over a billion dolls. Barbie and her counterpart, Ken, are widely regarded as the most popular dolls in the world.
Since the 80s, the brand has grown into a multimedia franchise, spanning video games, animated films, television, web series, and a live-action movie. An ever-present force in Western pop culture, the Barbie brand has spawned several memes.
