Controversies

On May 2nd, 2019, voice actor David Eddings, who voiced the character Claptrap in previous Borderlands games, replied to a tweet asking if he would be in Borderlands 3 and implied that he had not been paid for previous work (shown below).[13]

Ciri @theladyofworlds May 1 @davideddings Are you still Claptrap in BL3? David Eddings @davideddings Replying to @theladyofworlds No. For the first time, I insisted on getting paid for my performance and all of a sudden they couldn't afford me. Now I'm not telling them how to run their business but maybe next time they should put the $12M payment from 2K in the Gearbox bank account instead. Just sayin 11:21 AM - 2 May 2019

The following day, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford posted a tweet stating that Eddings "was paid handsomely during his employment" (shown below).

Randy Pitchford @DuvalMagic Replying to @Jeff Holland Mr. Eddings was paid very handsomely during his employment. After his employment he was made a relatively generous offer to reprise the role. Unfortunately, he turned that opportunity down 5:33 PM - 3 May 2019

On May 6th, Eddings posted a series of tweets claiming that Pitchford assaulted him "in the lobby of the Marriott Marquis" at the 2017 Games Developers Conference (shown below).

David Eddings @davideddings May 6, 2019 Replying to @davideddings I had a lot of mixed feelings when asked to reprise the role of Claptrap late last year and eventually realized I was willing to put differences aside and do something cool for Borderlands fans with my friends at Gearbox. David Eddings @davideddings I ultimately offered to do it for "free" in exchange for past royalties owed plus an apology for something I've never spoken about publicly until now: Randy physically assaulted me in the lobby of the Marriott Marquis at GDC 2017. 4,104 8:57 PM -May 6, 2019

On May 7th, the video game news site PCGamer[14] published a statement from Gearbox announcing they "will abstain from commenting" on his allegations:

"Gearbox takes any and all claims of this nature very seriously and we will abstain from commenting on the allegations Dave is making because it is a personnel matter. We appreciate David’s contributions to the Borderlands franchise and have continued to assert we would welcome him back into the mix as the voice of Claptrap and other future opportunities."

Walking Gun

Walking Gun refers to a bipedal machine gun briefly shown in the trailer.

Guns with legs? We got you, boo.

In 24 hours following the release of the trailer, multiple memes using the stills images of the gun were posted on Reddit, primarily in /r/gaming community.[5]
