Bubble Boy is a 2001 comedy film about a teen boy who lives in a plastic bubble because he has no immune system. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and has amassed a cult following since its release.

History

On August 24th, 2001, Bubbly Boy was released in the United States (trailer below).



Reception

The film received poor reviews from critics upon release. On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a score of 31% rotten based on 84 reviews and an audience score of 48% based on more than 243,000 ratings.[1][2] In their critics consensus, the site writes, "Bubble Boy bounces along with lame, offensive jokes that are more tasteless than funny."

The film was a box office disappointment, grossing more than $8 million on a production budget of $13 million.[3]

I remember watching this on Comedy Central in the early 00s, one of the low brow racial jokes I admit to still somewhat quoting with my younger brother is the "you want five hundred dollah?" line, with him and I progressively upping the excitement with each repeated "five hundred dollah!"
