It will take the bravery to face critique and the fortitude to weather outcry. It will ask that we expose ourselves to short term financial risk and that we don't back down from early losses, firm in the knowledge that we are doing right. We will have to be steadfast under the scrutiny of the world, and resolute when we are asked to justify ourselves in the court of public opinion. It will ask that, for a moment, we give up ease. But if we can do this, we can do good, real good with our medium. If we do this, we can expand the industry and bring whole new genres within the purview of games. If we do this, we can turn a greater profit while providing more meaningful experiences and reach audiences hither to unthinkable. If we do this, we can perhaps elevate some small portion of our V labor to an art." Extra Credits 2012. This was said on the Extra Credit episode "Facing Controversy" and when I first heard it, it gave me so much hope for the future of gaming. It was the kind of hope that Extra Credits often inspired, and helped light a path to a better future of gaming. This was what I, and so many others, came to Extra Credits for. Not just to learn about a medium we love, but to be inspired, to be given hope during times of controversy, hate, and anger. And yet over the years, this has slowly disappeared. especially, they've become It's been a long time since I was inspired by an episode of Extra Credits. In the last year or two more formulaic and safe. This has led to controversy, scandal, and a crippling of real discussion. Their latest episode, "Stop Normalizing Nazis" is the breaking point. I can't remember another time when an Extra Credits video was hit with so many dislikes, and it's deserved. Others have given very effective criticisms of it that I recommend you read, so all I'll say is that it goes against everything Extra Credits has fought for. It shows an unusual lack of research, and pushes for games to avoid topics and censure themselves. To see what they have come to saddens me deeply. I don't know if this is the end for Extra Credits. I hope it isn't. Despite their fall from greatness they still have so much potential. But between this and the James Scandal, who knows how this will go. Extra Credits, treat this as a wake up call. You need to change. The time has come to go back to your roots and remember what you fought for, what you believed in. Only there can you make a return to greatness and inspire us all again. Edit: Just going to also respond to their twitter response. When your community manager is literally doing the exact opposite of what your video on how to be a good community manager recommends, then maybe you should be rethinking your strategy. Just look at what happened to other companies (Ilike Dice) when they insulted their entire audience for disagreeing. Also I just checked every extra credits video focusing on politics I could find. None of them come close to having this many dislikes. None of them even have a 75-25% like ratio, much less over 50% dislike ratio. This isn't the normal response to your political videos, this is a watershed moment. And you're making it worse. This isn't how you respond to criticism, as your own videos have said. Either apologize or defend your opinions, but don't insult your audience. You're better than that. Or at least you used to be.
