LA\/ENDER @LavenderGhast They can have the most accurate sets, costumes and weapons, if I've learnt anything its that none of it will matter if the writing is bad. Stephen Ford @StephenSeanFord Fallout might be the best video game adaptation. Specifically in the sense that it perfectly captures the feeling you get while playing the games, all while leaning into the ridiculousness of the source material. Retcon Allegations

Editor's Note: This section contains minor spoilers; read at your own caution.

Following the premiere of the series, some fans alleged that the series retconned the events of the first two Fallout games and Fallout: New Vegas, all of them developed by other companies rather than Bethesda, the current owner of the IP. In the series, it is revealed that Shady Sands, the first capital of the New California Republic, fell in 2277 and was destroyed by a nuclear detonation at some point between 2277 and 2296, the year the show takes place. The location of Shady Sands also differs from Fallout and Fallout 2.

Additionally, New Vegas, a major location in 2281, the year Fallout: New Vegas events take place, is shown dark and supposedly abandoned.

Several posts about the supposed retconning went viral on X[16][17][18] / Twitter in the days following the show's premiere (examples shown below).

Cody @AltHistCody The Fallout show is good as a series but lore wise has wonky bits. It's annoying that the West Coast went back to Square 1. Before: The world is slowly falling apart. The US and China are at war. China invades Alaska. After a lot of fighting, the US retakes Alaska and counter-invades China. They are winning. China spite-launches a bunch of nukes, US retaliates. World ends.

After: Evil corporation ends the world because they're eeeeeeeeviiiiiiiil.

Seriously, they really had to dredge up that plot point from the rejected early Fallout film from the early oughts? Jitters my fritters.
