Learned about it around the end of last year, and gradually got more and more into it as 2023 progressed. Bought the original on the Steam Summer Sale.

My major thoughts:

Similar to Dark Souls, ii's not as punishing or brutal as its reputation implies. It's just a lot of the game's roughness is front-ended, and if you go in treating it like an RPG and not a survival horror game you are going to be in for a very bad time. The first party member you can get is useless in combat until you get one of the two possible weapons she can use (which takes a while), the first enemies are the dogs and guards who can instantly kill you or chop off limbs (respectively), and the most dangerous environmental hazard are the rusty nails exclusive to the first few floors of the dungeon.

It's a game that I feel there's no shame in researching online since there's so much jank and how some of the game mechanic interactions are not something you're going out of your way. And even if you have a good plan you can still end up with a stroke of bad luck at the worst possible moment and get fucked up.
