That Would Be Funny I Think is an ironic catchphrase used to express that a proposed idea, usually a misspelling, that could be funny.

Origin

On June 5th, 2013, a satirical Tumblr blog called Real Tweets posted a fake tweet from American celebrity Kim Kardashian saying "What if we spelled 'people' like this: peepole. that would be funny i think." (shown below).^[1] The post received more than 290,000 notes in the next seven years.

The resurgence of interest in the tweet is unclear, but the earliest found ironic use of the phrase "that would be funny" is a late summer 2019 post by user Kuro in "whenthe," the former official Discord server of r/okbuddyretard.^[2]

Spread

The first found image macro using the phrase "that would be funny I think" is an October 4th, 2019 post on r/okbuddyretard by user Unknowncows. The post gained over 500 upvotes before being archived (shown below, left).^[3] "that would be funny I think" took off on the subreddit after a November 10th, 2019 post by err_mate received over 36,000 upvotes in nine months (shown below, right).^[4]

Most of the jokes in the format suggest a humorous misspelling like the one found in the fake Kardashian tweet. A February 25th, 2020 post by W4heyblackstar^[5] with Shadow the Hedgehog suggesting "Google.cum" gained over 8,000 points on /r/okbuddyretard before being archived (shown below, left). A March 23rd post by Catalyst138^[6] suggested COVID-19 be called "COVID-69," gaining over 5,300 points (shown below, right).
