Final Fantasy XV is the fifteenth iteration of the JRPG Final Fantasy series, published by Square Enix and playable on the Playstation 4 and Xbox One. Final Fantasy XV follows the adventure of Prince Noctis and his friends as they explore Eos. Final Fantasy XV is notorious for having an extremely long development cycle due to various reasons including console and director changes.

Premise

Final Fantasy XV follows Prince Noctis and his friends as they journey together to meet his wife, Lunafreya Nox Fleuret. After learning about his homeland/kingdom getting invaded by a kingdom named Niflheim, Noctis's party goes on a journey that will save his kingdom and the world from the destruction of Niflheim.

History

In May 2006, Final Fantasy XV, then known as "Final Fantasy Versus XII," was first revealed in a CGI Trailer which showed a different version of Prince Noctis attack various enemies using both magic and physical weapons.^[6][8] "Final Fantasy XIII Versus" was to be part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy series, which included the Final Fantasy XIII series and Final Fantasy Type-0. It was also going to be a Playstation 3 exclusive with director Tesuya Normura. However, not much more information was known until January 2011 where another trailer of "Final Fantasy Versus XIII" which showed newer graphics, more characters and gameplay, which many fans pointed out that reminded them of Kingdom Hearts.

In 2013, another trailer was released, revealing a new game engine, more gameplay and better graphics. It also showed that it was going to released for Playstation 4 and Xbox One instead of exclusively the PS3. In 2014 another trailer showed the gameplay in full, and looks very similar to the 2016 version. In 2015 a demo was released known as Final Fantasy XV: Episode Duscae in which players play as Noctis.

In early 2015, it was revealed that Final Fantasy XV was going to be delayed to November 29th 2016, in order to put the finishing touches on the game.

Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV: Kingsglaive is a prequel movie to Final Fantasy XV showing events that lead up to Final Fantasy XV. It features a new protagonist named Nyx Ulric, an orphan that is a part of an elite set of Kingsglaive guardians who can wield magic. Nyx Ulric, determined to protect his new home and kingdom, goes out to save it from the invading of kingdom of Niflheim. During the movie, we see also see Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, Noctis's wife to be, and learn about her origins and what happens to her during the beginning events of Final Fantasy XV.

DLC Cancellation

On November 8th, 2018, Square Enix announced via sream that the remaining downloadable content for Final Fantasy XV had been cancelled and that game director Hajime Tabata had left the company.^[13] Four DLC episodes had been announced, one following the characters Ardyn, Aranea, Lunafreya, and Noctis. Only Ardyn's will be released. On the stream, Tabata stated:

In regards to my next endeavors and near future, I have a project that I truly wish to solidify as my next challenge after FFXV. For that reason, I have decided to leave my current position and start my own business in order to achieve my goal. As production of Episode Ardyn continues and Luminous Productions works on new projects, I felt that it was time for me to hand over the torch to the next-generation group of talented and trustworthy colleagues and believe that they will create something amazing.

Main Characters

Noctis Lucis Caelum

Noctis Lucis Caelum is the young prince of the kingdom of Lucis.^[1] Noctis also holds his father in high regard and cares about his health deeply, wishing his father not to die, as that would make him king.

Prompto Argentum

Prompto Argentum is a childhood friend of Noctis.^[5] At first he was very overweight and chubby, but he eventually gained the determination to lose weight in order to gain confidence and become Prince Noctis' friend. He enjoys taking pictures. He also has a soft spot for animals.

Gladioulus Amicita

Gladiolus Amicitia is a close friend and mentor that Noctis knew since he was child.^[3] At first Gladiolus disliked the prince,due to their clashing personalities. However after Noctis saved his sister and took the blame for it, Gladiolus respected Noctis and became one of his closest friends. Gladiolus also taught Noctis how to properly use a variety of weapons. Gladiolus also seems to like camping as well.

Ignis Scientia

Ignis Scientia is a close friend of Noctis and the party's strategist.^[4] He took care and looked over Noctis' well being during his college years, and learned that Noctis was in fact very bitter over the fact that once his father died he would be king. Ignis is a very skilled cooker and cooks for the party.

Fandom

A reddit was made for Final Fantasy XV in 2012 and has 14,500 readers as of November 30th, 2016.^[11] Various fan art has been made for Final Fantasy XV throughout the years on DeviantArt. ^[12]
