About
Heathers is a teen drama and dark comedy film directed by Michael Lehmann and released in 1989. Starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater in lead roles, the movie centers on Veronica Sawyer, an Ohio teenager who is a part of the popular clique in her high school that consists of the titular Heathers, three girls who share the same name and are the most ruthless in reinforcing their social status. Despite not making back its production budget in the box office, the film was a critical success, eventually gaining a cult following. A musical adaptation was created in 2010 followed by a television series in 2018.

Heathers was directed by Michael Lehmann and initially premiered on January 21st, 1989 at the Sundance Film Festival, followed by a wider release a few months later on March 31st.

Reception
Heathers would receive positive reviews, with the reception growing positive as time went on. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 93% Certified Fresh rating from 57 total reviews, and an 83% audience approval rating from over 40,000 users, with the consensus reading "Dark, cynical, and subversive, Heathers gently applies a chainsaw to the conventions of the high school movie -- changing the game for teen comedies to follow."
Despite generally positive reviews, the film only made a third of its budget back at the box office, and grossed over $177,000 during its opening weekend.
