About

Judas is an upcoming video game directed by Ken Levine, his first since Bioshock Infinite: Burial At Sea, released in 2014. The pedigree behind the game and its debut trailer generated significant hype prior to its release. It also generated some discourse due to being billed as "Bioshock in space," which some joked could be applied to Bioshock's predecessor, System Shock.

History

After the release of Bioshock Infinite: Burial At Sea, director Ken Levine founded Ghost Story Games and began development on what would become Judas.[1] Levine wanted to create a game in which player choices would alter the details and ending of the story. It initially had a 2017 release window but faced multiple delays and challenges, leading to a 2022 Bloomberg[2] report that characterized it as being in "development hell." Later that year at The Game Awards, the first trailer for Judas debuted (shown below).[3]

On March 26th, 2024, IGN[4] posted an interview with Levine, as Ghost Story Games offered the publication and Geoff Keighley a hands-on look at the game, now slated to release in 2025. That day, Keighley posted a vlog featuring scenes from the game and his own impressions of it from his preview, gaining over 86,000 views on YouTube in one day (shown below). According to the previews, the game is a "procedurally-generated roguelite."

Online Presence

Judas has generally generated excitement for its release during its development, particularly after the trailers for the game were revealed. The game has a dedicated subreddit[5] that has gained over 700 members since its creation in May 2020 (as of March 2024).

On March 26th, Twitter user @Okami13_[6] posted a summary of what was learned from the previews (shown below). The tweet gained over 2,200 retweets and 11,000 likes in one day.

The post led to some jokes, particularly the descriptor "Bioshock in space." The predecessor games to Bioshock, System Shock 1 and 2, were set in space. Stephen Kick,[7] the director of the System Shock games, joked on Twitter, "Bioshock in space! Why didn't I think of that?", gaining over 230 retweets and 3,800 likes in one day (shown below, left). Hbomberguy joked about the game,[8] "It's like speed 2 only with a bus instead of a boat," gaining over 260 retweets and 4,900 likes in one day (shown below, right).

I don't like to be a negative nancy about games before we get our hands on them, but I'm getting Atomic Heart vibes from this where it feels like the game is reaching for far more than it could grasp.

The ideas and concepts in Bioshock: Infinite were too convoluted for their own good, to the point where it made them seem really dumb despite the high-level of thought put into multiversal and pan-dimensional world building.

It seems that instead of pulling back a bit and focusing on more grounded ideas like with the first two Bioshocks, Ken has instead decided to double down and create a more nebulous and unstructured story instead.

I'd love it if he could pull it off well, but it's a damn hard job that he's cut out for himself and it will be oh so easy for the whole thing to fall apart if the story is as free flowing as the PR press release is claiming it to be.
