Pokémon Clover is a ROM hack of Pokémon FireRed developed over the last half of the 2010s, with an early version releasing in 2017 and a "finished" version releasing April 10th, 2020. The game takes inspiration from 4chan's image-board and /vp/ Pokémon culture, and features several adult jokes and references to memes. Players explore the region of "Fochun" and the "Ebin Islands." It also features 386 Fakémon.

History

Development on Pokémon Clover began in late 2014.^[1] The game was primarily developed by Twitter user @CloverSqueet^[2] with 40 other contributors to the game.^[1] Initially, the game was a ROM Hack of Pokémon FireRed, which released in 2017. A page for the game was initially uploaded to Emulatoronline^[3] in November of 2016 and the game was playable in February of 2017 (gameplay shown below).

The development of the game continued over the next several years, and a massive update, titled version 1.0 was released on April 10th, 2020. Features of the game include a completely unique soundtrack. The difficulty is increased over mainline Pokémon games by having AI that switches Pokémon at disadvantageous situations and a more strict EXP system. It also has quality-of-life improvements to the series, such as reusable TMs and deletable HMs.

The game was widely praised upon release and developed a community of Let's Players on YouTube (examples shown below).

The game has also drawn praise for its creative Fakemon, many of which are references to memes and 4chan injokes. For example, there is a Pingus Pokémon called Pengas in the game (shown below, left) and a Pedobear Pokémon called Spedobear (shown below, right).

Kymmi

The game also has a fightable trainer named "Kymmi" who is herself a reference to KYM-tan. She leads the game's version of the evil team, "Team Karma."^[4]
