Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie – Walpurgisnacht: Rising (Japanese: Gekijōban Mahō Shōjo Madoka☆Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten) is an upcoming Japanese animated film and direct sequel to the 2013 film Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion.

The film continues the story of Madoka Magica following the events of Rebellion, with Homura Akemi serving as a central character. It is scheduled to premiere in Japanese theaters on August 28th, 2026.

History

Plans for a follow-up to Rebellion were first teased in 2015, when a concept for a new Madoka Magica film was revealed. The sequel was officially announced in 2021 as part of the franchise's 10th-anniversary celebrations.

The project was subsequently developed as a continuation of Rebellion, with the returning creative team working on a story centered in part around Homura Akemi.^[1]

On September 10th, 2023, the official @AniplexUSA YouTube^[2] channel uploaded the first trailer for the upcoming film, which accumulated over 3.5 million views in less than three years.

Walpurgisnacht: Rising experienced several delays during production. The film was initially planned for release in winter 2024 before being pushed to winter 2025 and later to February 2026.

Further production delays ultimately moved the release to August 28th, 2026, marking more than a decade since the release of Rebellion.^[3]

On July 2nd, 2026, the official @AniplexUSA YouTube^[4] channel uploaded the final trailer for Walpurgisnacht: Rising, which received about 360,000 views in about one month.

Online Presence

Throughout the years, constant production delays left many fans wondering when the film would be released, if at all.

On January 13th, 2026, X^[5] user @meduka_ebooks posted "Walpurgisnacht Rising delayed again," accompanied by a GIF of Homura holding a gun to her head, which has received 94,273 views and 7,657 likes in nearly seven months.

On April 30th, 2026, X^[6] user @MangaReporter posted about a new trailer reveal and release date for Walpurgisnacht Rising, receiving 1.91 million views and 36,861 likes in over three months, with many other X users using the post to discuss the new film.

On April 30th, 2026, X^[7] user @cabrumcos quote-posted the trailer announcement, joking that fans would have to assemble the movie from its teasers. The post received 157,102 views and 11,528 likes in over three months.

On June 28th, 2026, X^[5] user @th_takemikaduti posted screenshots of Devil Homura, comparing her pose to the main antagonist of the film. The post received 3.03 million views and 6,818 likes in over five weeks.
