About
Selling Sunset is a reality television series airing on Netflix which follows the lives of Oppenheimer Group real estate agents working to sell homes in Los Angeles. The series' popularity has been attributed to its colorful cast of female agents, which makes it reminiscent of Real Housewives, and its scenes of luxurious L.A. homes, giving it an air of house-hunting reality TV shows.
History
Selling Sunsert debuted on March 21st, 2019 on Netflix.[1] As of August 12th, 2020, the series has three seasons on Netflix, all of which consist of eight episodes. Seasons 2 and 3 debuted on May 22nd and August 7th, 2020, respectively. The show follows real estate agents Chrishell Stause, Christine Quinn, Maya Vander, Mary Fitzgerald, Heather Young, Davina Potratz and Amanza Smith, real estate agents at the Oppenheimer Group, headed by Jason and Brett Oppenheimer. The show focuses on the personal lives and interpersonal squabbles of the agents as they attempt to sell homes in Los Angeles (trailer shown below).
Reception
The show received little critical attention after its first season. Decider[2] recommended "Stream it" in their review, but noted the show had familiar trappings of other reality television series like Million Dollar Listing and Below Deck on Bravo. However, the show began gaining more attention after its second and third seasons. The Washington Post[3] posted an article about the show on May 25th about the cast dramas in the second season. The New Yorker[4] wrote about the way in which the show subtly implies the vast wealth gap in Los Angeles, noting how the character Amanza seems to be the only character struggling with actual financial problems while much of the other cast seems comfortably wealthy.
Online Presence
The show gained a large following online, particularly after its third season, which saw agent Chrishell Stause receive news that her husband Justin Hartley was filing for divorce over text message. Much of the chatter centered around hatred for Davina, a character who insisted on needling Stause about her divorce in the final episode. Twitter user @RhysCallow[5] made a joke about booking a listing Davina had to waster her time, gaining over 1,800 retweets and 10,000 likes (shown below, left). User @ChrisBtw97[6] posted a Movie Villain / Actual Villain meme about Christine and Davina, gaining over 200 retweets and 1,000 likes (shown below, right).
Memes about the show were covered by The Tab.[7] The show's subreddit, /r/sellingsunset,[8] was created March 24th, 2019 and has over 7,900 subscribers.
