About

The Steam Machine, nicknamed the Steam Cube, Gabe Cube or GabeCube by fans, is a mini gaming console and PC designed by Valve that was announced in November 2025. Its cube-shaped design has been compared to the Nintendo GameCube by many. Several internet users posted memes jokingly calling the video game console a "Gabe Cube," a play on the GameCube and Valve co-founder Gabe Newell's name. Other internet users posted jokes about how the console might dominate the market for other video game consoles like Xbox and PlayStation, given Steam's positive reputation among gamers, and the versatility advertised in the console's release. The reveal of the console notably sparked numerous reactions and memes in late 2025, as well as press coverage.

History

The Steam Machine was announced on November 12th, 2025, on the Valve YouTube channel.[1] It uses SteamOS (Valve's Linux-based operating system) and can use customizable faceplates to change its cosmetic design. It was also listed on the Steam store[2] on the same day with a full listing of features and hardware specifications.

Geoff Keighley, founder and host of The Game Awards, also posted a promotional video of the Steam Machine on his X[10] / Twitter account, @geoffkeighley, gathering over 5 million views and 40,000 likes in a day.

The Steam Machine is slated for release in early 2026. According to Gizmodo,[3] it runs the Linux-based SteamOS and is claimed to be "over six times more powerful" than the Steam Deck. The micro PC is equipped with a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 CPU and RDNA 3 GPU (28 CUs) that support 4K at 60 FPS (with FSR) alongside 512 GB or 2 TB SSD (expandable via microSD).[4] The Steam Machine is also marketed as a PC, and would allow users to install their own apps and their preferred operating system (OS).

A wireless VR headset called the "Steam Frame" was also announced on November 12th, 2025, by Valve Corporation, alongside a newer version of the "Steam Controller."
