On July 5th, the phrase was reposted by X^[2] user @DaijoOwODesuka, garnering around three likes. On July 8th, Tumblr^[3] user depsidase posted a surreal meme reading, "You can easily return to the past, but no one is there anymore," depicting a child whose features have been replaced with TV static riding a bike, garnering over 16,000 notes in four years. This is the earliest known meme to use the phrase.

Spread

Several variations of the phrase continued to spread over the following months and years. On July 26th, 2021, Redditor u/BoyWithALoafOfBread posted a story based on the phrase to the subreddit /r/nosleep,^[4] garnering over 490 upvotes in four years.

On November 18th, 2024, TikToker^[5] @wanna.be.a.kid.again posted an early 2000s nostalgia video featuring the caption, "You could return, but no one would be there," garnering over 3 million views in five months.

On January 27th, 2025, Redditor u/Cute-Durian8038 posted a similar compilation using a version of the phrase to the subreddit /r/2000sNostalgia,^[6] garnering over 7,500 upvotes in three months.

On February 23rd, TikToker^[7] @mkw.hd posted a video using the phrase over footage of Mario Kart Wii, garnering over 650,000 views in a month.

On March 26th, X^[8] user @realradec posted footage of someone walking around the now inactive video game Playstation Home, writing, "you can go back, but no one else will be there," garnering over 13,000 likes and 900,000 views in a week.
