About
Suits is an American legal drama TV series created and written by Aaron Korsh. The show revolves around Mike Ross (portrayed by Patrick J. Adams) who begins working as a law associate for Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) despite never attending law school. Airing for nine seasons from June 2011 until September 2019 on the USA Network channel, the series received an expressive fandom during its runtime, as well as accumulated a notable fandom and internet presence in 2023 thanks to TikTok edit videos showing clips of the show.
History
Suits first appeared on USA Network's channel development slate under the title A Legal Mind in April 2010. The original idea of the show was intended to be a "half-hour Entourage-type based on my experiences working on Wall Street" according to showrunner Aaron Korsh.[1]
On June 23rd, 2011, the pilot episode of the Suits TV series premiered on USA.[2] The first trailer of the show was uploaded to YouTube[3] by user @LeProkda on May 28th, 2011. The post (shown below) garnered over 676,000 and 518 likes in 12 years.
Suits concluded on September 25th, 2019, after nine seasons and 134 episodes.
Reception
As of late August 2023, the show has a 91 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.[4] On Metacritic[5], Suits has a weighted average score of 65 out of 100 based on reviews from 29 critics.
In his July 18th, 2012, review of the series, Daniel Goldberg of SLANT magazine[12] wrote, "Suits seems perfectly tailored to make its characters all look good, which is simultaneously its most attractive asset and its most discomfiting drawback."
Online Reactions
On August 5th, 2012, the Facebook[6] page SuitsMemes was created, garnering 39,000 followers in 11 years. The page's earliest meme post about the show uses an image macro of Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman) with the overlay text "Harvey wants to get Litt up!" The meme (shown below) garnered over 340 likes and 40 shares in 11 years.
Clips of the show have also been memed numerous times on YouTube over the years. For instance, on February 12th, 2021, YouTube[7] user @CursedBeauty posted an edited version (shown below, left) of the pilot episode of the show, which amassed roughly 7,000 views and 395 likes in two years. On January 17th, 2016, YouTube[8] user @eireneM posted a video compilation featuring the funniest Suits moments. The video (shown below, right) garnered over 2.5 million views and 20,000 likes in seven years.
Suits' TikTok and Netflix Success
On August 9th, 2023, New York Post[9] Journalist Michael Starr wrote an article titled "How ‘Suits’ really made streaming history 4 years later," detailing how the show amassed an expressive viewership after debuting on Netflix in the U.S. in early July 2023. The article says the show "snared 3.1 billion viewing minutes in its opening week on Netflix and Peacock and 3.7 billion viewing minutes the following week."
Starr explains one of the key aspects of the show's resurgence is due to TikTok videos showing clips of previous seasons going viral on the platform.
For instance, on April 12th, 2023, TikToker[10] user @daledonoghue8 posted a clip from the pilot episode of the show (shown below, left), which amassed over 56 million plays and 5.1 million likes in four months. On April 22nd, a fan edit clip posted by @wanderlcust[11] highlighting some characters received more than 1.6 million plays and 179,000 likes in four months (shown below, right).
