About

Super Meat Boy is an action platform game developed by independent game development company Team Meat, headed, at the time, by developers Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes. The game has the player take control of the titular character, Meat Boy, and must save his girlfriend, Bandage Girl, from the clutches of the evil Dr. Fetus by traversing multiple levels involving intense and difficult platforming segments that require quick reflexes and great control of Meat Boy by the player.

History

Super Meat Boy began its development as a flash game in 2008 titled Meat Boy, created by Edmund McMillen, and released on Newgrounds. [1] After being contacted by Nintendo and Microsoft to develop a game for their platforms, McMillen and fellow game designer, Tommy Refenes, formed the development team Team Meat and worked on designing an expanded version of the original flash game. Development began in January 2009 and Super Meat Boy was released on Xbox Live Arcade on October 20th, 2010, with the Nintendo release being canceled.

Super Meat Boy: Forever

On August 29, 2014, Team Meat announced a sequel to Super Meat Boy in development, known as Super Meat Boy: Forever, to be released on PC, console, and smartphone devices. A trailer for the game was released on December 8th, 2018 via Team Meat's YouTube channel.

Rival Rush

On August 30th, 2018, Team Meat announced via Twitter a Super Meat Boy: Forever themed competitive card game known as "Rival Rush" and released a tutorial video the following day. The object of the game is that players assemble decks consisting of 20 action and skill cards which the players use race to the end of the level.

Reception and Legacy

Super Meat Boy released to critical acclaim from review outlets. Super Meat Boy holds an aggregated score of 90/100 for the Xbox 360 release of the game.[2] Critics lauded the game's platforming elements, tight controls, and retro gaming aesthetic. Reviewers also commented on the difficulty of the game, commenting on its hard, but fair difficulty. On January 3rd, 2012, Team Meat commented, via Twitter, that the game had surpassed over 1 million sales across PC and Xbox 360 platforms.[3]

Super Meat Boy's grueling development cycle would be covered in the 2012 documentary Indie Game: The Movie, alongside other prominent indie games. Super Meat Boy would be parodied by the activist group PETA in a game titled "Super Tofu Boy" in protest against the game's meat theme. The character of the parody game would later be added to the main game as an unlockable character though with inferior stats, making him the worst playable character in the game.
