About

Trap Adventure 2 is a popular troll game developed and published in 2016 Hiroyoshi Oshiba for mobile phones. The game, which presents itself using pixel art, is notoriously difficult and has become popular on Twitter in 2018, after users posted footage of their ill-fated playthroughs of the game.[1]

History

On June 29th, 2016, mobile game developer Hiroyoshi Oshiba released the sequel to one of his games, Trap Adventure, a game he released three years prior.[2] The game was a platformer that used pixel art and chiptune music, causing many to call it a Super Mario clone. However, the extremely high difficulty caused it to be less associated with Mario and more closely compared to games such as I Wanna be the Guy. [3][6] In their App Store description of the game, they describe it as:

Caution!! This may be the most hardest, irritating, frustrating game EVER.

If you tend to exasperate often, I recommend you not play this game.

It will literally drive you insane. I PROMISE.

As written above, this game is VERY STRESSFUL.

You may get so irritated and frustrated that you throw your phone out the window.

I can't take any responsibilities for the displeasure this game may cause.

Even after reading this you are still eager to play the game, then go ahead.

Good luck.

Reception

While the game was released in 2016, Trap Adventure 2 returned to the public's view following a series of popular tweets that documented several failed playthroughs of the game. On January 22nd, 2018, Twitter user @P_MEN876 posted a video showcasing footage of a playthrough of the game. Three days after it was posted, it earned over 12 million views, over 200,000 likes, and 130,000 retweets (shown below).[4]

Two days later, on January 24th, 2018, Steve Noah replied to the video, saying that he had "No idea what this game is called, but whoever made it, is the devil." (Shown Below). This tweet got around 150,000 likes and 80,000 retweets in one day.[5]

The same day, YouTuber Videogamedunkey uploaded a video in which he comedically attempts to beat the game before getting a game over and quitting. The video got over 1.2 million views after one day (shown below, left).[7] When posted on Reddit [11] by Redditor hotmemes the video received more than 4,200 points (87% upvoted) and 190 comments in less than two days.

On January 26th, PewDiePie posted a playthrough of the game. The video (shown below, right) received more than 120,000 views in less than 30 minutes, and 2.3 million in a day.[12]

Media Coverage

Several media outlets covered the game, particularly the game's difficulty, including HuffPost,[8] Washington Post,[1] Forbes,[9] New York Daily News[10] and more.
