Take Your Age, That's Your Age refers to a series of memes which parody various math tricks used to calculate one's age. The memes parody the tricks, usually by oversimplifying them or referencing memes and popular culture.

Origin

The format parodies simple math tricks that involves performing various operations with one's birthday or similar inputs to calculate one's age (example shown below).

On January 31st, 2013, Boldomatic[1] user Masonbucher submutted the earliest known joke that parodied these math tricks (original author unknown, shown below, left). On March 16th, 2013, the official Twitter[2] account of 9GAG posted the joke, with the post gaining over 2,400 retweets and 460 likes in 8 years (shown below, right).

Spread

The joke saw further spread in the form of image macros and tweets in the following years. For example, on June 11th, 2015, Redditor[3] catsnstuffz posted the joke to the /r/shittyaskscience subreddit, where it received over 4,700 upvotes. On June 13th, YouTuber[4] Logan Paul tweeted the joke (post shown below, left). On February 19th, 2016, writer Dashner James posted an image macro with the joke to Instagram,[5] with the post gaining nearly 8,000 likes in three years (shown below, center).

In late 2018, a derivative version of the joke first posted in 2015[8] gained spread, with the caption altered to "Take your age, subtract 2, then add 2. That's your age." For example, on February 19th, 2019, Instagram[6] user timothyskim posted an image macro that gained nearly 6,000 likes in two years.

September 2021 Resurgence

On September 10th, 2021, Redditor FaresAIN posted a version of the joke referencing the 9 + 10 = 21 meme, with the image macro featuring character Anton Castillo from video game Far Cry 6. The post received over 31,400 upvotes in the /r/okbuddyretard[7] subreddit in one month (shown below).

The post inspired an influx of ironic Take Your Age memes in the following weeks, primarily in /r/okbuddyretard subreddit, with the format gaining association with Anton Castillo and Giancarlo Esposito, the actor who performed the role.
