Ted Cruz in the Bushes at the Border is an image macro series based on video footage of Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz standing in the brush at the United States' southern border.
Origin
On March 25th, 2021, Senator Ted Cruz published video of himself reporting from the southern border. In the video, he says, "We’re at the Rio Grande; the water is right behind me,” Cruz begins. “I’m on the Texas border along with 18 senators. We made the trip to see the crisis that is playing out." The post received more than 1.3 million views, 21,000 likes, 11,000 comments and 9,000 retweets In less than one week (shown below).

That day, the verified @SenateGOP Twitter[1] account tweeted photos of Cruz and other Republican politicians at the border. They wrote, "1:00AM on our southern border. 18 Senators are here with Border Patrol on their night shift. We saw the massive influx of migrant crossings. Countless women + children. We were heckled by cartels. This is a humanitarian crisis. And Joe Biden needs to address it immediately." The tweet received more than 4,950 retweets and 3,500 likes in less than one week (shown below, left).
Shortly after the picture and video went viral, people began mocking the footage. Twitter[2] user @Daksthetruth tweeted, "Ted Cruz was heckled at the Mexican border last night. According to multiple sources, they were shoutings things like: 'Yo Ted, your wife is hot!' & 'Your dad loved JFK!'" The tweet received more than 4,200 likes and 800 retweets in less than one week (shown below, center). Twitter[3] user @jeremynewberger shared a screenshot from the original Cruz video and wrote, "When you dress up as both Han Solo and Chewie." The tweet received more than 3,300 like and 400 retweets in less than one week (shown below, right).
On March 29th, the website The Daily Dot [4] published a report on the meme.
