Teen Girl Goes On a Date With Godzilla is a viral video of a Japanese teenager, Seira Watanabe, a big Godzilla fan, going on a date with a person dressed as Godzilla. The video comes from a 2020 episode of the show Tantei! Knight Scoop, which looks to turn viewers' requested dreams into reality. The video originally went viral in October 2020 and saw a second wave of virality in early 2024.
Origin
On October 16th, 2020, the Japanese television series Tantei! Knight Scoop, a comedy series in which the hosts try and fulfill their viewers' dreams, aired an episode in which they put a 13-year-old girl, Seira Watanabe, on a date with "Godzilla."[1] Watanabe is a big fan of the Godzilla series and prior to the date shows off her collection of Godzilla figures, also demonstrating her best Godzilla roar. She also showcases several pieces of artwork depicting herself in romantic situations with Godzilla, including one drawing in which Godzilla is stomping on her.
The rest of the episode documents a date between Watanabe and a person in a realistic Godzilla costume. They go to a Godzilla museum, have a picnic and share a kiss on the beach. The original 2020 YouTube upload is no longer available, although it was reuploaded to YouTube[2] in 2021 (shown below).
Spread
The video gained viral spread in October 2020, with numerous media sites reporting on it, including Kotaku[3] on October 20th, 2021, Anime News Network[4] on October 22nd and Mashable[5] on October 23rd.
On January 15th, 2024, Redditor u/LustfulMirage uploaded a higher quality version of the video to /r/GODZILLA,[6] writing, "As funny as parts are, it's more wholesome than I was thinking. Deep down, we all wish we could be in her place, and maybe that's because… Godzilla is inside each one of us," garnering over 1,100 upvotes in two months.
On the same day, X[7] user @domesticmothman posted four screenshots from the video, writing, "Thinking about the girl who went on a full day date with Godzilla," garnering over 21,000 likes in two months (shown below).
On March 11th, X[8] user @14_kaiju posted a portion of the video, writing, "A teenage girl fulfills her lifelong dream of going on a date with Godzilla," garnering over 56,000 likes and 11,000 reposts in two days.
The post inspired several memes about Godzilla, a roughly 250 million-year-old creature, going on a date with a 13-year-old, portraying him as a predator. For example, also on March 11th, 2024, X[9][10] users NEEMOAHTOAD and "JustinWhang":https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/people/justin-whang made posts like this, garnering over 32,000 and 5,800 likes, respectively, in a day (shown below). That day, Dexerto[11] reported on the video.
On March 13th, X[12] user @14_kaiju posted screenshots of two of the drawings that Watanabe drew of herself and Godzilla, writing, "She drew these beforehand," garnering over 28,000 likes in under a day (shown below).
