About

Temple (Super Smash Brothers Stage), commonly referred to as "Hyrule Temple," is a popular stage in the Super Smash Brothers franchise, particularly the Super Smash Brothers Melee iteration. The large stage, inspired by Hyrule Temple from The Legend of Zelda franchise, has many notable areas within it that have been the subject of memes, particularly a slanted, cave-like area towards the bottom of the stage, dubbed the "Hyrule Fight Club," where intense fights are said to take place.

Origin

While there was a stage called Hyrule Temple in Super Smash Brothers 64, the iteration that released 2001's Super Smash Brothers Melee would go on to become popular in memes (Ultimate iteration shown below). The stage reappeared in the following three Smash titles.

One of the earliest memes to circulate about the stage was posted to Tumblr in roughly the fall of 2015 by user thatmetticguy,[1] though the account has since been deactivated. The meme labels notable areas of the stage. Of note, the top level is labeled Weenie Hut Jr. while the slanted cave area towards the bottom of the stage is labeled "Hyrule Fight Club."

Spread

The stage's design has been widely praised by Smash fans, adding to its enduring reputation as one of the most popular stages in the series. For example, on April 30th, 2020, YouTuber MockRock[2] posted a video praising the stage and analyzing why it was so popular, gaining over 237,000 views in four years (shown below).

The stage has periodically shown up in numerous meme formats over the years. For example, on February 8th, 2023, TikToker @vatbunny[4] posted a Hot Diggity Dog meme about the stage, gaining over 130 likes in one year (shown below, top). On April 28th, 2024, Twitter user @Proofyy_[3] posted an Asylum Where They Raised Me meme highlighting the "Hyrule Fight Club," gaining over 15,000 retweets and 87,000 likes in one day (shown below, bottom).
