X Sliding In (Japanese: すべりこむ○○シリーズ, Suberikomu Marumaru Series) refers to a series of hand drawn animated videos of characters sliding into a cardboard box, mimicing Maru the Cat, while playing the Kyu! Kyu! Kyu! Nya~! dance song in background.

Origin

On July 21st, 2009, Nico Nico Douga (NND) user 柳～やなぎ～ さん uploaded a video titled Chen Sliding in (すべりこむちぇん)^[1] (shown below, left), where Chen, a catgirl character from the Touhou Project, is sliding through a box in a similar manner to one seen in the August 2008 Maru video "滑り込むねこ。" (shown below, right). In making the video, 柳～やなぎ～ さん used the same music from the 2008 video game Monster Hunter Freedom Unit that can be found in an older NND fad Kyu! Kyu! Kyu! Nya~! Dance.

Spread

One of the first sites to cover the fad was 初音ミクみく(Miku Hatsune Miku)^[12], a Vocaloid blog, on August 1st, 2009. Over the next several months, the fad was also discussed on personal blog 吾唯知足？^[13], Pokemon blog ポケモンしちゃうのか！？^[14] and encyclopedia site Pixiv.^[15] After a discussion thread^[11] that began on August 2nd, 2009, すべりこむ○○シリーズ was added to the Nico Nico Douga Dictionary^[9] on July 30th, 2010.

Notable Examples

As of August 2012, there are 363 videos tagged "すべりこむ○○シリーズ"^[2] (slide series) on NND and 39 videos on YouTube.^[10] The thematic elements range from Touhou compilations^[3], Byaaah! So Yummy^[5] and Diglett Underground^[4] to Leaked Senkaku Video^[6], Vocaloid compilation^[7] and Hakuouki^[8] among others.
