Thak Gya Hu Bro is a Hindi phrase that translates to "bro, I am tired" in English. The phrase started trending on Twitter in October of 2020, accompanied by a photoshop meme depicting Pepe The Frog and other photoshopped characters standing on a bridge about to commit suicide.

Origins

The phrase "thank gya hu bro" has been popular on Indian Twitter throughout 2020, generally used to show dissatisfaction with the year. On October 15th, 2020, Twitter user and app developer memechat_app^[1] posted a Tweet reading, "Fill in the blank: #ThakGyaHuBro ______" which helped the hashtag go viral (shown below). The tweet received over 1.6 thousand comments in a day, many of them image macros featuring Pepe and other photoshopped characters standing on a bridge, about to commit suicide (example shown below, right). It is unknown who first created this image.

Spread

Twitter users continued to share variations of the format on Twitter over the next few days, accompanying the titular phrase with relatable situations. On October 15th, 2020, Twitter user _Zakeera^[2] posted a version of the meme with the Internet Explorer icon photoshopped over Pepe's head (shown below, left). The meme also took off on Instagram. On the same day, Instagram user abhinavranjanpandey shared a number of variations on the format as a slide post,^[3] one of which roughly translates to, "Bro, I am tired of one way love." (example shown below, right).

On the same day, yahoo! news India^[4] published an article on the trend, including various examples. India Memes posted a collection of the memes on the same day.^[5]
