Thank You, Mr. Helpful is a phrase spoken by Jay in the sixth episode of the sixth season of the American television series LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu.^[1] A screenshot of Jay from the episode, along with the titular phrase, became an image macro and reaction meme on Reddit in October of 2020.

Origin

In April of 2020, imgflip user illmakeninjagomemez4u^[2] uploaded an image macro featuring the top text, "When the game tutorial tells you not to die," attached to an image of Jay sarcastically saying, "Thank you, Mr. Helpful" (shown below). The image received 1,323 views and 12 upvotes on imgflip in 6 months.

On September 29th, 2020, Redditor Matix894^[3] posted a meme using the imgflip macro to r/memes, garnering 37 upvotes in 7 days (shown below, left). Matix894 posted several other variations on the format over the next week, with none garnering over 100 upvotes. Then, on October 6th, they posted another version of the meme, this time gaining over 10.3 thousand upvotes and 5 awards in a day (shown below, right).
