About

That's a lot of fish is a quote from the 1998 kaiju film Godzilla. The quote became infamous for its seemingly unnecessary purpose, and has since been used as a means to criticize the movie as a whole.

Origin

The quote originally appeared in the 1998 kaiju film Godzilla. During a scene where the military plans to lure Godzilla into a trap, Matthew Broderick's character sees this and comments on the situation in a very matter-of-fact manner. The scene was later uploaded to YouTube by user Eebro0 on October 30, 2009 (shown below).

Spread

The joke gained more interest after The Nostalgia Critic used it a lampooning device in his review of Godzilla. The review was initially uploaded to the That Guy With the Glasses website on November 26, 2008.[1] The clip was then uploaded separately from the review on September 1, 2012 (shown below).

The phrase has also been used a joke by several YouTubers on their videos. On May 26, 2014 YouTuber Johnny Chase uploaded a playthrough of the Godzilla NES game (shown below left). On August 9, 2014 YouTuber Skawo uploaded a playthrough of Paper Mario: Sticker Star (shown below right). Both videos' titles are references to the quote.

The quote was also parodied in a World of Warcraft achievement "That's a Lot of Bait" added on November 23, 2010.[2]
