Godzilla Had a Stroke Trying to Read This and Fucking Died is a reaction image of a behind-scenes-photo from the 1992 film Godzilla vs. Mothra in which Godzilla is laying in a wheelbarrow. The photo was turned into a reaction image captioned, "Godzilla had a stroke trying to read this and fucking died" in May 2019 and became a popular image panel on Reddit typically paired with indecipherable text in June 2020.

Origin

On August 29th, 2012, Gizmodo^[1] published a collection of behind-the-scenes Godzilla photos, which included the image of Godzilla in a wheelbarrow from the 1989 film Godzilla vs Biollante_. On May 25th, 2019, iFunny^[2] user TitanusMosura posted the image and added the text, "Godzilla had a stroke trying to read this and fucking died" which received over 6,100 likes in a year (shown below).

Spread

On June 11th, 2020, Redditor TastyMeatBawls posted the image in reaction to a tweet about Karen to r/facepalm^[3] and garnered over 5,600 points (96% upvoted) in a month (shown below, left). On July 2nd, Redditor the-boi-600000000000 posted another example of its use to r/memes^[4] and accumulated over 13,100 points (91% upvoted) in 27 days (shown below, right).

On July 28th, Redditor -perfectly_insane- posted an indecipherable tattoo to r/dankmemes^[5] and used the reaction image in response (shown below). The post gained over 2,500 likes (94% upvoted) in a day.
