Origin

On June 13th, 2017, an anonymous user submitted an image to 4chan's /b/ with the message "Help the city /b/".^[1] The image depicts Godzilla attacking a city, with a small figure labelled "you" in the center. The caption of the image asks posters to use MS Paint to draw something to protect the city with.

Spread

On December 10th, 2017, Imgur user uploaded a collection called Godzilla is attacking your city which contained 12 variations of the meme. The gallery included cariations referencing EA DLC and Push it Somewhere Else Patrick. The gallery has over 126 thousand views as of March 18th, 2018.^[2]

The same day, Tumblr blog Racing Bara Karts made a post of variations of the meme, many of which involved manipulating the text or items in the image to change the nature of the scenario into one more absurd and funny.^[3]

On December 13, 2017, meme-sharing site me.me uploaded an image of the same format featuring Mario's Super Smash Brothers using his cape to deflect Godzilla's direction. This is parodying the cape's function in the original game, which would change the direction of enemy players when struck.^[4]
