Origin

On January 19th, 2024, TikToker^[1] @yesimsamwilmot, aka Sam Wilmot, posted a video where he talks about how he finds it "really funny" that he dresses with a sort of "tough" vibe but cries to Phoebe Bridgers in the shower and is a fan of Searows and Boygenius, implying he's actually soft, garnering over 194,000 views in two months (shown below). In the video, he's dressed in all black with a T-shirt advertising his friend's tattoo brand, the logo written in a heavy metal font, baggy pants, Converse shoes and a cuffed beanie.

I think it's really funny that I dress like this and give off like, tough, like a tough sort of thing going on and then I cry to Phoebe Bridgers in the shower and I listen to Searows and Boygenius and… the dichotomy is crazy, but uh… I don't even listen to hardcore music that much. Look at this shirt, it's my friend's tattoo brand. Anyway, I'm going to go. Later.

On March 11th, 2024, X^[2] user @powcampsurvivor posted the video with a critical caption, writing, "I thought everyone was exaggerating but these guys really do exist," garnering over 12,000 likes and 1,900 reposts in under a day (shown below).

The upload inspired further memes and criticism of the video. For example, that day, X^[3] user @listenupnerds posted a response that gained over 4,400 likes in under a day (shown below, left). X^[4] user @nomoneyjared reposted it, writing, "If you dress like this dont think you're tough but I do assume you are emotionally abusive to women," garnering over 12,000 likes in under a day (shown below, right).

On the same day, X^[5] user @ilovefamiIyguy posted, "You ever see someone and just know their Tinder age range is set at 18-21," garnering over 9,800 likes in under a day (shown below). The dialogue from the video also spread on the site as a copypasta, attached to various images of people and characters with a "tough guy" style (see Various Examples).
