Origin

On August 27th, 2017, Redditor NingenOverHeavan posted an original image macro to /r/Animemes^[1] titled "Begone T H O T" captioned "When she wants to hold your hand on the first date," using an image of Yui Kashii from Hajimete no Gal^[2] subtitled "the girl had turned into a lewd slut," joking that a girl holding hands on the first date makes her slutty (shown below). The post gained over 1,159 upvotes in four years.

Spread

The image saw increased use in memes over the following years, often playing off a similar joke about hand holding or another light caring gesture being comically exaggerated as lewd. For example, on December 31st, 2020, Instagram^[3] page animemeslol posted a new version of the meme like this, gaining over 15,000 likes in a year (shown below).

On August 4th, 2021, Instagram^[4] page anime_healthcenter posted a version in reaction to an image of Fie Claussell from The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel saying "Could you… pat me on the head?" gaining over 4,400 likes in four months (shown below).
