About

The Reason For The Call Today John Is is a Lip Dub meme phrase that comes from the 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The line, said while Leonardo is trying to sell a bad business plan to a man named John, began to be used on TikTok in late 2023 as the background audio to wives and girlfriends attempting to convince their spouses to spend money on exorbitant things.

Origin

On December 25th, 2013, the movie The Wolf of Wall Street was released, with the plot being about defrauding rich investors by selling them into bad deals. One of the pivotal moments of the movie, in which Leonardo's character convinces a man named John over the phone to spend over $4,000 on shares of a stock. The scene that the audio comes from was uploaded to YouTube by the channel vendulakk[1] on January 11th, 2014, where it would gain over 9.9 million views in nine years (shown below).

On TikTok, the audio was taken and used by the TikToker monicascassi[2] to simulate the first half of the phone call, in which she is calling her husband to let him know about something exciting that just came across her desk, but with the caption providing the punchline of her trying to use his credit card to buy something that she wants to buy. This first usage, posted on November 8th, 2023, earned over 20,000 likes in two months and introduced the audio to the platform for others to use (shown below).

@monicascassi I should be in sales, the way i get to convincing him 😂🤪 #marriedlife #couplescomedy ♬ original sound – Monica Scassi

Spread

The audio quickly started to spread across the website, with many more variations being made in the following weeks. On November 12th, 2023, the TikToker xomgitsbunnie[3] uploaded a version of the meme in which the audio stays the same, but the setup is changed from a girlfriend or wife talking to their spouse about spending money to being about a kid wanting their parent to acquire something, with a PowerPoint presentation being made to help their case (shown below).

@xomgitsbunnie Anyone else deal w/ this? 🤣 #bunnieandbailee ♬ original sound – Monica Scassi

As time went on, the catchphrase remained consistent to the source meaning, but the audience using it began to expand. On November 30th, 2023, the TikToker benfromphilly[4] used the audio format to simulate him calling the Philadelphia Eagles Vice President Howie Roseman to alert him to the news that the NFL player Zach Ertz was available to be picked up, implying that he wants the Eagles to acquire the player. This version would gain over 2,000 likes in two months while showing the meme's versatility in different fandoms (shown below).

@benfromphilly Zach Ertz requested his release from the Cardinals and they requested it!! On behalf of Eagles fans everywhere, please sign him!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 #phillyeaglesland #phillyeagles4life #phillyeagles4life #philadelphiaeaglesnation #philadelphiaeaglesfootball #phillysportsfans #phillysportsfan ♬ original sound – Monica Scassi
