About
There Are More Than Two Genders Infographic is an exploitable infographic that shows a series of gendered pictogram people, which have both male and female parts colored either blue or pink. Emerging in early 2023, users began using the graphic in memes by captioning selected pictograms with descriptions of situations when a man might perform a stereotypically feminine action, or vice versa.
Origin
The infographic was first tweeted by Terror Alarm, a Twitter account belonging to an entity that claims to be a "private security firm" and uses artificial intelligence to generate news and social media content because AI can create "technically mostly agenda-free tweets." Across its Twitter and Telegram accounts and on its website, Terror Alarm often posts content about and in support of Israel but Terror Alarm says that it is "in no way affiliated with any country or government or religion," while still banning discussion of Christianity and Islam on its pages.[1]
The "Two Genders" infographic was first posted on February 27th, 2023, and was later pinned to Terror Alarm's profile (seen below). Starting on June 15th, 2023, right-wing influencers on the platform with considerable followings started interacting with and replying to the post, possibly bringing it into wider visibility.[2]
Spread
By June 20th, 2023, the original post had been liked over 9,000 times and quote-tweeted almost 50,000 times. The most popular quote-tweet in this early period of virality was the meme posted below by user @4theloveofJP on June 19th, 2023, which described carrying heavy groceries.[3]
Other quote-tweets tended to select one of the figures from the infographic with both male and female-coded body parts and then use it to describe a situation in which a person identifying as a man acts in a feminine way, or vice versa. Generally, these actions were tied to things done with specific body parts in a "male" or a "female" way, identifying certain behaviors as masculine or feminine.
For example, on June 19th, Twitter user @zyd0578 assigned a female head to "Guys with skincare routines," earning 14,200 likes in less than 24 hours (seen below, left).[4] @reembeem97 used the icon of a male and female pictogram to depict going to see the upcoming films Oppenheimer and Barbie together in theaters, earning almost a thousand likes in four hours on June 20th (seen below, right).[5]
Memes were posted in several languages including English, Spanish and French.
