"They Hate Us Cuz They Anus" is a memorable quote uttered by the character Dave Skylark in the 2014 comedy film The Interview. In the film, the character misquotes the popular expression "they hate us because they ain't us," which is used to criticize another's jealousy.

Origin

On December 11th, 2014, the film The Interview premiered in the United States.^[1] In the film, Skylark (portrayed by James Franco) accuses a critic of being jealous of him by saying "They hate us 'cause they ain't us." His producer Arron Rapaport (played by Seth Rogen) mishears him and responds, "They hate us 'cause we anus?" Skylark then clarifies.

About two weeks after the premiere, on December 25th, YouTuber Digadogup posted the clip on the site, receiving more than 200,000 views in four years (shown below).

That day, Urban Dictionary ^[2] user Chris C defined the phrase on the site. They wrote, "From the movie 'the interview.' Seth Rogan's character misunderstands his friend's (played by James Franco) phrase 'they hate us cause they ain't us.' The phrase is then repeated many times throughout the movie to sound like 'they hate us cause they anus.'" The post received more than 300 upvotes (shown below).

The following day, FunnyJunk ^[6] user jkrule posted a GIF of the moment on the site. The post received more than 400 upvotes in four years (shown below).

On December 28th, 2014, following the popularity of the line, Seth Rogen tweeted, ^[3] "I actually thought he was saying hate us cause they anus. #TheInterview." The tweet received more than 2,000 retweets and 3,600 likes in four years (shown below, left).

Several days later, on January 1st, 2015, Redditor ^[4] Akabutz posted "How did 'They hate us cuz they anus' start?" in the /r/OutOfTheLoop subreddit. The post received more than 90 points (77% upvoted) and 10 comments in four years.

On January 15th, 2015, Imgur ^[5] user Forgetits posted the moment as a reaction GIF of the moment (shown below, right.
