This Is the Only Correct Game Design refers to a series of memes exploiting and parodying an illustration of the game world design from the 1996 video game Diablo. The format achieved virality on Twitter in mid-June 2023 after a user posted the illustration as a joking example of "the only correct game design."
Origin
On June 15th, 2023, Twitter[1] user @dialacina tweeted an image from the 1994 pitch document[2] for the 1996 video game Diablo depicting the general layout of the game's world. The image, captioned by @dialacina "This is the only correct game design." received over 3,400 retweets and 47,600 likes in six days (shown below, left and right).
Spread
In the same thread, @dialacina tweeted[3] a vertically flipped edit of the image, writing "okay, this one too." The tweet gained over 180 retweets and 8,200 likes.
The original tweet inspired more memes about "the only correct game design," with users editing the original image to reference game world design of various games, most notably that met in Soulsborne games.
On June 17th, 2023, Twitter[4] user @delaneykingrox posted a humorous edit poking fun at open-world games that received over 3,400 retweets and 59,900 likes in four days. Later that day, Twitter[5] user @AesirAesthetics posted an edit that received over 1,200 retweets and 14,900 likes in the same period (shown below, right).
The trend maintained popularity on Twitter through mid-June 2023, with several versions going viral.
