About

This Man Isn't Black refers to a scene from the english dub of Dragon Ball Super in which a soldier is about to fire at Goku, mistaking him for the series' antagonist Goku Black, before he's stopped by Future Trunks who exclaims, "Hold your fire! This man isn't Black!" Fans joked about the scene because out of context it sounds as though Future Trunks is telling the soldier not to fire because Goku is not of the black race.

Origin

The scene comes from episode 56 of Dragon Ball Super, titled "Rematch With Goku Black! Super Saiyan Rosé Appears." The episode aired in Japan on August 28th, 2016.[1] The English dub aired on March 25th, 2018.[2] The same day, several YouTube users uploaded the "This Man Isn't Black" scene to YouTube. One by WaChu Doin gained over 74,000 views (shown below).

Spread

After the episode aired, several Reddit threads appeared making fun of the line. Some threads include a post to /r/AccidentalRacism[3] that gained 84 points and a post to /r/anime[4] that gained over 3,700 points. Remixes of the clip began to appear on YouTube as well. For example, YouTuber Auxano mixed the clip with a Nintendo Direct reaction by Twitch streamer Etika, gaining over 16,000 views (shown below, left). YouTuber Absolutely Geek'd posted a video of himself reacting to the clip, gaining over 7,800 views (shown below, right).
