On November 11th, 2019, South African creator Demi Demi uploaded a motivational video to YouTube Shorts^[1] from his @demidemi4536 or Demi Demi official YouTube account in which he encouraged viewers to remain resilient during difficult times, repeatedly stating, "Tough times never last, only tough people do." Throughout the speech, Demi punctuated his serious advice with lengthy stretches of improvised gibberish and tongue-rolling sounds.

As of early July 2026, the video has received over 4.6 million views, 206,00 likes and 4,850 comments.

Over the following year, the video garnered significant virality as it spread across the web and saw usage in memes and edits.

On February 12th, 2020, TikTok^[2] user @dihaelprins posted the video to the platform, receiving over 2.8 million views and 317,000 likes in over six years. The upload helped introduce the quote to a wider TikTok audience.

On November 6th, 2020, musicians Max Hurrell and The Kiffness released the official remix "Tough Time Never Last" featuring Demi Demi, transforming the viral speech into a song that accumulated over 563,000 streams on Spotify^[3] in roughly five years.

The meme remained popular through subsequent years as new audiences continually rediscovered the clip. The sound was reused across TikTok, Instagram and YouTube Shorts in sports edits, gaming videos, reaction memes and ironic motivational posts.

On May 13th, 2026, TikTok user^[5] @the.forgestudio posted a video of someone getting a tattoo of Demi Demi and his motivational speech, receiving over 4.1 million views and 287,000 likes in under two months.

The meme experienced a renewed surge in popularity in 2026 after Formula One driver Charles Leclerc was heard repeating, "Tough times never last, only tough people last," over team radio during a race following his victory at the British Grand Prix.

On July 5th, 2026, the official F1 TikTok^[6] account, @f1, posted a video of Charles Leclerc referencing the meme, which gained over 1.9 million views and 405,000 likes within a day.

The same day, the @f1 TikTok^[7] posted a video celebrating Charles Leclerc's victory at the British Grand Prix using the sound, which received 1.8 million views and 494,100 likes in about one day.
