About
Undertaker Standing Behind AJ Styles is an image macro series featuring a screenshot from the WWE's professional wrestling event "Wrestlemania 36" of wrestler AJ Styles smiling while, unbeknownst to him, his opponent the Undertaker stands behind him.
Origin
On April 4th, 2020, the WWE broadcasted "Wrestlemania 36," which included a Boneyard match between wrestlers AJ Styles and the Undertaker. In the match, Styles believed that he had buried the Undertaker in a grave. As smiled about his apparent victory, the Undertaker appeared behind him (screenshot below).[1]
Spread
Following the moment, people online began using the shot of the Undertaker behind Styles in a series of object labeling memes. For example, that night, Twitter [2] user @crisafi_paul posted one in which Styles is labeled "2020 is gonna be my year" and the Undertaker is labeled "2020." The tweet received more than 1,000 likes and 375 retweets in less than one week (shown below, left).
Throughout the week, the meme continued to appear on Twitter and other platforms (example below, center). On April 7th, Instagram [3] user @shitheadsteve posted a variation that received more than 73,000 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below, right).
